The density and reactivity of the [beta] -adrenoceptor as measured from the right atrial tissue of patients undergoing open surgery was linear with the [beta] -adrenoceptor on lymphocytes in the corresponding circulation. Right atrial tissue samples were taken from 21 patients undergoing selective coronary artery bypass grafting. None of the patients had acute myocardial damage, and none of the catecholamines were used within 3 weeks prior to surgery. The right atrial specimen is divided into two parts: one for the determination of the density of β-adrenergic receptors and the other for the determination of myocardial contractile responses to isoproterenol.
