1950年6月25日,朝鲜战争爆发。美国侵略者凭借其号称“世界第一空军强国”的空中优势,在朝鲜战场上投入了空军1/5的兵力,计11个联队、1100多架各型飞机。参战的飞行员大都是参加过第二次世界大战的空战老兵,还有许多所谓的“王牌飞行员”。美国飞机活动极为猖狂,从朝鲜的东海岸到北面的中朝边境线,轰炸时间不分昼夜,扫射目标不分大小,见人炸人,见物炸物,“即使一人一马也不放过”。当时,我志愿军空军还是一支十分年轻的队伍,从指挥员到战斗员无一人有空战经历,他们的对手却是一个号称“不可战胜”的强敌。
