互联网只是在做一件事情:让电脑相互交谈。这里说的电脑也包括了智能手机等手持设备。我们在互联网上所做的一切事情,比如玩游戏、分享照片、与朋友聊天等,都用到了相互连接起来的电脑。将电脑很好地连接起来,能让人们干各种各样的事情,这同人们熟悉的看、听、交谈等方式都很不相同。电视擅长播放影像节目,却无法让人们彼此交谈,也收不到其他国家的视频;老式的电话很适合两人间的交谈,却无力让10个人一起玩同一个游戏,也无法帮你查单词。而互联网的好处在于:能帮任何电脑做上面提到的所有事情。
The Internet is just doing one thing: getting computers to talk to each other. The computer here also includes handheld devices such as smartphones. Everything we do on the Internet, like playing games, sharing photos, chatting with friends, etc., uses computers that are connected to each other. Connecting computers well allows people to do a wide variety of things, which are quite different from what people are familiar with, listening, conversing, and so on. Television is good at playing video shows, but can not get people to talk to each other and to no other country’s video. Old-fashioned phones are great for talking between two people, but can not afford to let 10 people play the same game together and can not help you find words. The benefit of the internet is that it can do all the things mentioned above for any computer.
