The S antigen is a retinal pathogenic component that causes an autoimmune response. This antigen can be isolated from the retina extract and purified by chromatography or isoelectric focusing. Animals immunized with low doses of S antigen purified from various species of animals produce experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis in guinea pigs, mice, rabbits, and monkeys. Antibodies activated by these antigens cross-react with various mammalian S antigens.
