The safety of the dam of the Army Corps of Engineers has received an increasingly scrutiny since planning for the construction of large dams began in the 1930s. The catastrophic dam collapse in the United States in the 1970s brought new insights into dam safety. Many large U.S. dams are owned and operated by federal agencies and are responsible for the safety of dams within their jurisdiction. Over the years, most federal agencies have established sound design, construction and operating procedures to ensure dam safety. Although the federal agency owns and manages many large dams, it still accounts for only a fraction of the total number of dams in the United States, and most non-federal dams are privately owned and the safety of these dams is the responsibility of the owner of the dam and the state government in the site of the dams .
