隐喻是一个古老的问题。两千多年前的亚里士多德曾在他的著作中有相当篇幅关于隐喻的定义和思考的论述。长期以来,隐喻作为修辞学或修辞格手段而备受关注。进入20世纪60年代后特别是80年代,莱考夫等(Lakoff et al.1980;Lakoff 1987;Lakoff et al.1989)构筑了隐喻是从根源领域向目标领域概念映射这一定义。认知理论认为,隐喻不仅仅是一种修饰形式,更重要的是认知事物的一种手段,隐喻的基本作用是从始源域向目标域映射过程中,使得大部分抽象思维通过体验获得感知,在认识新事物、构建新概念、建立推理机制以及形成思维方式等方面,揭示了人类认识客观世界的能力。
