“开天窗”原指侵吞财物

今天“开天窗”指报纸上留下成块空白,在明清时期,它是指侵吞财物的行径。明代藏书家郎瑛在所著《七修类稿》中描述,他和众文士约定以盗贼之事对对子。一人曰:“打地洞可对开天窗。”众文士说:开天窗并非盗,这人辩解:“今之敛人财而为首者克减其物,谚谓开天窗,岂非盗乎?”利用职务便利,以多开或虚报的名目侵吞财物,这就是当时的“开天窗”。因是使用不正当手段,文士才会将其等同于盗。
