Steel makers such as Nippon Steel and Japan Steel Pipe Co., Ltd. decided to reduce their steel exports in the second quarter of this year, giving priority to the need for reconstruction in the earthquake-stricken areas in Kansai, Japan, and increasing the output of construction steel such as H-beams and steel plates. As the demand for construction steel in Asian countries increased, Japanese steel makers reduced their exports, causing the price of steel sold in Southeast Asia to increase. In the first quarter of this year, Nippon Steel and other six steel makers exported output of 4.7 million tons to 4.8 million tons, which was approximately 300,000 tons less than originally planned. The main reason was that Kobe Steel, which was affected by the earthquake, was forced to stop production.
