According to “Nihon Keizai Shimbun” reported on October 27, 1987: Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has formulated a 10-year research and development plan for the use of biotechnology to transform insects to cultivate the “insect industry” for manufacturing pharmaceuticals and industrial raw materials. In the past, the major targets of biotechnology were large livestock and minimal bacteria. This project of research and development is mainly based on insects. This is a special plan. In the past, only insects used in the industry were silkworms and bees. Silkworms play the role of bioreactors that convert mulberry leaves into filaments; bees act as robots for collecting nectar. Both of these can not be imitated in modern industrial technology
