伴随着烟台改革开放的步伐和与时俱进的脚步,烟台公路事业驶上了高速发展的快车道。作为烟台公路建设的主力军,烟台市公路管理局广大干部职工始终以实现公路现代化,推进经济跨越发展为己任,不断向更高的目标攀登烟台市公路管理局下辖26个直属单位,共有职工2241人(其中大中专以上学历950人,党员1009人),拥有总资产26.9亿元,其中固定资产5.06亿元,机械设备1663台(套),主要负责烟台市国省道干线公路的建设、养护、路政管理和规费征收等工作。近几年来,在上级主管部门和当地党委政府的正确领导及大力支持下,在公路建设者的拼搏努力下,烟台公路事业进入了一个全新的发展时期,全市公路整体面貌发生了巨大变化,现代化路网结构基本形成,公路综合通行能力显著提高。截至2004年底,全市干线公路通车里程达到2228公里,其中高速公路369公里,一级公路523公里,高等级路里程位居山东省前列。全市公路综合好路率达到93.6%,文明样板路里程达686公里。规费征收等各项工作超额完成了上级下达的任务指标。
