迟子建的小说创作从总体上看，与传统的情节模式明显不同。她不屑于对现实生活的简单复原，亦不热衷于故事的悲观离合或惊险曲折，而是在抒发主观性情的同时，执意寻找人物和生命的意义，从而形成了独具特色的情调模式。具体表现在具体的生活场景展示，富有特征的细节描写和拟人化的景物描绘三个方面。在某些故事性较强的作品中，作家也能通过意象的穿插或抒情文字的诗意表述，营造出撩拨人心的情调氛围。
On the whole, Chi Zijian’s novel creation is obviously different from the traditional plot mode.
