According to Dr. D. Ferruppius of the University of California, Los Angeles, California, there are 546 people in the United States who were blind in only immature retinal disease in 1979. Therefore, blind people in Japan are estimated to be 80 in one year. The United States is seven times Japan. When compared with infants of the same weight, the United States is more balanced than Japan with a low rate of blindness. In spite of this, there are many blind people because of immature children. In Japan, 1.64 million babies were born in a year, of which 400 were less than 1 kg and 4,500 were from 1 to 1.5 kg. In the United States, about 3.4 million people were born, less than 1kg of 17,000 people, 1 ~ 1.5kg of 20,000 people.
