《新青年》杂志在中国现代文学史、思想史乃至新闻传播史上都具有举足轻重的作用。在《新青年》创刊、转折与发展的精神历程中,主撰起到了举足轻重的引领作用,但主撰的编辑思路并非是从一开始就设计好的,《新青年》的编辑过程也不是主撰一人独断的,而导致《新青年》同人分裂的原因更是多方面的。将一个包含着诸多矛盾的复杂历史事件归因为主撰个人“引领”的失误,既抹煞了历史的丰富性也遮蔽了历史发展的必然性。
