The port of Hamburg as the gateway to Europe is recovering. The vantage point of Hamburg harbor - the easternmost harbor in the Atlantic Ocean and the westernmost port of the Baltic Sea - is yet to become another gateway to East Asia into the Piro Sea area. It is also a gateway for Scandinavian countries to enter Germany, Central and Southern Europe. Regional container transport, ferry networks, high-speed rail lines and the well-developed motorway network bring together and disperse huge cargo flows to the port of Hamburg. In 1993, the port of Hamburg achieved a throughput of 66 million tons and a container throughput of 2.5 million TEUs, an increase of 9.6% over the previous year. This was achieved despite the economic downturn in Europe. Port of Hamburg, the first in Germany and the second-largest container port in Europe, are in a strong position both in domestic and international competition. It is predicted that by the end of this century, the cargo throughput of this port will be about 100 million tons and the container throughput will reach 4 million TEUs with an average annual increase of 6% and 7% respectively.
