The article presents an email interview with Dr.Joan L.Bybee,Distinguished Professor at the University of New Mexico in the Department of Linguistics and the 2004 President of the Linguistic Society of America.Her research interests include morphology,phonology,typology and universals,grammaticalization and psycholinguistics.Dr.Bybee started the usage-based studies of language from as early as the 1970s.And it is found that in recent years,usage-based linguistics or usage-based theory(UBT) has gained currency in the cognitive and functional approaches to language.In this interview,Dr.Bybee informs us of the most important aspects of UBT,including the basic tenet,the nature of language as a complex adaptive system,effects of frequency on language structure,methodological implications,and so on.
