章林撰文《从否定到返回：儒学和西学互镜关系下的演变》指出，面对西学以及西方文明，儒学经历了一个不断地自我调适和转化的过程，并且出现了四种主要的对待儒家传统文化的态度：一是以五四运动为代表的“否定”的态度，主张以新文化代替旧文化，以新道德代替旧道德，以新方法代替旧方法。
