Hughes Aircraft Corporation has been designated to begin implementing a contract to supply eight new 10-centimeter long-range radars for the air defense needs of the southern European border under the model HR-3000. Seven of these will be located in Turkey (3), Greece (2) and Italy (2), respectively, in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s “Ground-based Air Defense Systems” (NADGE). Another will be provided to Portugal. The contract negotiations ended in November 1985. The original bid was submitted in December 1983 and Celerena was declared the only technically qualified bidder. After arguing hard, Thomson and Hughes Aircraft were also convicted.
