Despite the fact that the United States has eradicated epidemic polio, there have been some recent questions about the oral contraceptive poliovirus (OPV) compared with the new synergistic inactivated vaccine. Although the vast majority of wild-type poliovirus has been eliminated in developed countries, there are still a few cases of vaccine-associated poliomyelitis. This article summarizes the current problems and proposes a review of recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine in 1988 regarding the combined immunization of poliomyelitis inactivated vaccine (IPV) and OPV.
