首先,智利大学的理科学生迟早总得碰到不用本族语而用英语编写的课本。科技内容的许多文献都用英语撰写的这一事实,促使学校当局要考虑解决这一问题。他们得出有必要向主修科技学科的学生教授科技英语的结论。在得出这一结论前,学校当局考虑了解决这个问题的三种可能方法。第一个方法——也许是最难获得成功的一个——是要求作者把他编写的科技教科书用非常简易的语言改写,这样可使为数众多的理科学生都能理解。第二个方法是把一切负担都压到学生身上,听凭学生按其对科技英语的理解程度而学得或好或差。第三个方法,我个人认为是最妥善的,包括教
First, science students at the University of Chile have to meet sooner or later with textbooks written in English that do not speak their native language. The fact that many of the literature on scientific content are written in English prompted school authorities to consider the issue. They conclude that there is a need to teach Scientific English to students majoring in science and technology. Before arriving at this conclusion, the school authorities considered three possible ways of solving the problem. The first method, perhaps the hardest to succeed, is to ask the author to adapt the science textbooks he has written in a very simple language so that a large number of science students can understand it. The second method is to put all the burden on the students, at the mercy of students according to their understanding of science and technology.
