The U.S. Department of Defense is using hand-held GPS receivers to equip the Army and Marine units participating in the Desert Storm Action Plan to help them navigate the desert without a hitch. At this point, Trimble Navigation has provided the military with more than 3,000 small, high-precision navigation devices and is in the process of rolling out an additional 6,300 orders for the GPS program office since the Gulf War. Magellan Systems Inc. has also delivered some 2,500 hand-held GPS receivers to the U.S. military and other multinational forces and is also accelerating production. Trimble authorities say that without a GPS receiver effectively navigating in the desert, it is impossible to navigate the desert without a march of map in the unmarked desert at night. Reports from the front indicate that some troops have lost their way for several hours.
