In the second shuttle flight, the United States plans to put the OSTA-1 (Space and Earth Applications Office No. 1) in its cargo hold in Colombia as the space shuttle’s first official payload. OSTA-1, a Johnson Earth Center-administered earth observation experiment, will lay the groundwork for future space exploration of oil and mineral resources and will increase US space remote sensing capabilities. Another purpose of the OSTA-1 experiment is to verify whether the space shuttle can become a test platform for earth observation. OSTA-1 weighs 2542 kilograms, consists of five remote sensors and two smaller systems. Five remote sensors will be installed on U-shelves developed by British Airways and bolted
