土家族的姑娘在出嫁之前,主要用“哭”和“唱”的形式来迎接出嫁的来临,亦称为“哭出嫁”、“哭嫁囡”、“哭轿”。哭嫁歌是湘西土家族人民劳动和智慧的结晶,也是土家族婚俗文化重要组成部分。它具有鲜明的民族特点和地方特色,是以湘西社会生活、传统习俗、宗教文化、劳动方式等观照下形成的音乐宝典,希望湘西土家族的哭嫁歌世世代代传承下去。
