In an attempt to find new sources of energy and to identify the more important issue of the precise era of Gondwanaland’s ancient land division, Antarctic Treaty member states conducted a large-scale Earth science research project in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Currently, a deepwater drilling project has yielded new results on the geologic development of the Antarctic shelf and on the history of the region’s climate. The result ruled out the possibility of storing oil and gas on the eastern Shelduck shelves. According to D. Futterer, although a potential oil reservoir was found in the lower chalk deposit, its depth was only 500 m. At this depth, there is a pressure and temperature of compaction of a deposit of at least 2 km thick to convert organic matter to hydrocarbons, but none of these conditions exist.
