本文反思了从古代到现代四大洲的城市在表达和传播帝国理念方面的诸多路径。帝国的不同类型都在我们的视野之内:领土的,商业的,游牧的,定居的和反应性的。这些城市本身可能就是统治的中心地带,经常从早期帝国继受权力符号;商业和统治的前哨;军事营地;或兼而有之。帝国统治的战略和这些城市形态本身经常是通过统治集团的传统而被塑造,并与被认为值得仿效的其他帝国政治和宇宙哲学体系相关联。与此同时,那些被纳入帝国版图之内的城市形态和政权结构都被帝国本身所吸收和利用,有时甚至是在这个帝国已经解体之后还长期存在。
This article reflects on the many ways in which cities in the four continents from ancient to modern times have expressed and disseminated the concept of empire. Different types of empire are within our sight: territorial, commercial, nomadic, settled and reactive. These cities may themselves be at the heart of governance, often subject to power symbols from early empires; business and ruling outposts; military camps; or both. The strategies of imperial rule and these urban forms themselves are often shaped by the traditions of the ruling clique and associated with other imperial political and cosmopolitan philosophical systems that are deemed worthy of imitation. At the same time, the urban forms and regime structures that were incorporated into the imperial territory were both absorbed and utilized by the Empire itself, sometimes even after the empire had been dissolved.
