Experts from the European Environmental Protection Agency have recently stepped up inspections of ships in the European Community to prevent pollution at sea. It requires strict control over shipping in congested waters of Western Europe, frequent inspections of hull structures and the forced use of isolated ballast tanks and inert gas systems.
