The addition of steel fibers to the concrete mix can improve the impact strength, flexural strength, fatigue strength, toughness, crack resistance, and spalling resistance of the concrete. Because steel fiber reinforced concrete has good impact resistance, it is often used in dams and spillways, industrial doors, bridge decks, airports, and highways. The amount of steel fiber depends on the method of use, size and shape. The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is developing a specification for steel fibers. The usual dosage is 50 to 200 pounds of steel fiber per cubic yard of concrete, equivalent to 0.38% to 1.5% of the volume of normal heavy concrete. In order to mix steel fibers homogeneously in concrete and prevent clumping, steel fibers should be incorporated into fresh concrete. There are two common methods.
