During the carcinogenesis of hepatocytes, the AFP gene undergoes a de-blocking change; therefore, alpha-fetoprotein is a good indicator of the regulation of gene expression in hepatocellular carcinoma cells. In this paper, we report the isolation of mRNA from AFP-positive rat hepatocellular carcinoma (BERH-2) (Qiang et al., 1978), which was established by our institute, and translated into wheat germ cell-free protein synthesis system AFP. Liver cancer mRNA extraction was performed according to the slightly modified method of Nakanishi et al. (1977).
