郑板桥有对联写道:“种十里名花,何如种德;修万间广厦,不若修身。”修身立德乃做人之根本,不仅是其安身立命的基础,亦是其为政致仕的纲要。王安石说,“修其心,治其身,而后可以为政于天下”;张衡说,“不患位之不尊,而患德之不崇”;罗隐说,“不患无位,而患德之不修也”。修身立德对为官从政者而言,具有亘古不变的本源作用,“知所以修身,则知所以治人;知所以治人,则知所以治天下国家矣”。
