Science and democracy are the two flags of the May Fourth New Culture Movement. The Revolution of 1911, which overthrew the autocratic dynasty that lasted for 2,000 years and established the first republic in the history of Chinese civilization, is undoubtedly an important turning point in the modern history of China and profoundly affects the historical development of the Chinese nation. In the title of “Science and the Revolution of 1911,” we will discuss the interaction between science and revolution in different periods before and after the Revolution of 1911. In particular, the emancipation of the mind and the progress of society resulting from such interaction are undoubtedly both important topics in the history of science and society. Open up new research directions and space; both have important academic significance, and they can also help students learn new and forward-looking future, and make it more clear that the academic community should assume its own responsibility in the new civilization construction. In January 2010, the first meeting of the new editorial board of our magazine put forward the proposal of convening a small-scale symposium and opening a special column for research as a key measure for improving the quality of this journal and advancing academic research. The opening of this column is based on the publication of the article “Science and the Revolution of 1911 - the Symposium for the 100th Anniversary of the Revolution of 1911” co-hosted by Wuhan Science and Technology University and Wuhan University of Technology in mid-June in the place of Wuchang first centennial Selected editors, and in the centenary of Revolution Revolution appeared in front of readers. The rich and in-depth content of these essays not only corroborated the appropriateness of the topic selection, but also strengthened our confidence and determination in enhancing the quality of the journal through thematic studies and research columns. We sincerely hope that academic colleagues can pay attention to this publication and make various suggestions so that we can make more contributions to the promotion of academic and cultural reintegration.
