虚谷(1824～1896)原姓朱,名怀仁。祖籍安徽歙县,家居扬州。早年曾任清政府参将,太平军起义后,他迫于时事艰难动荡,“意有感触,遂披缁入山”成为一个不礼佛、不茹素,以书画自娱自给的流浪僧人,主要活动于扬州、苏州、上海等地。虚谷的艺术才能较为全面,山水、花鸟、蔬果、肖像、界画无所不能,尤以花鸟禽鱼题材传世最多,水平最高。他的花鸟禽鱼画以稚拙出奇的
