M.A.N.-B&W20/27柴油机于1980年开始投产。该系列柴油机缸径为200mm,行程为270mm,有直列式和V型两种机型。该系列机扩大了低功率区域的覆盖面。到1984年,已售出在1000r/min下单缸功率为100KW(136hp)的M.A.N.-B&W20/27柴油机635台(其中包括许可证转让生产的)。这些柴油机大都用于船舶推进、辅助机组及地而发电设备。值得关注的是,这种灵活性很大的发动机系列中的直列式机型,有既能燃用重油又能燃用双燃料的发动机,还有加长了行程(20/31)的火花点火式发动机。已有多台发动机成功地运行了20000h以上,从4000～5000工作小时后的中间检查情况
