湖北省恩施市太阳河乡有“民歌之乡”之称,当地传唱着大量民歌小调。太阳河民歌小调以私情歌为主,兼有很少的参军歌、农事歌和规劝歌。歌词内容多是对男女私情的描写,盼情人、送情人、与情人私会等是小调歌词描写的主要对象,其露骨大胆、活泼奔放之态与明代民歌的“私情谱”特征有颇多相似之处。同时太阳河民歌小调的体制结构极具特色。以太阳河民歌小调为代表的恩施小调拥有长期的历史积淀,与被称为“我明一绝”的明代民歌之间具有可比性。
