A preliminary study of 20 critically ill patients calculated the cost of intensive treatment on a per-patient basis. Fixed costs (equipment, service provision, and site), semi-fixed cost (staff), and marginal cost (treatment) are calculated separately. The results showed that the cost of intensive treatment has a wide range. For an autonomously breathing patient, the average daily consumption is 399 pounds (95% between 388 and 460 pounds); for an oxygen-suffering patient, the average is 726 pounds. (£ 656-795). The total cost per patient is an average of 1,980 pounds, and each survivor is required to increase the cost by 16% (£347) because the mortality rate for each intensive treatment group is 20%. The more severe the disease, the higher the cost, and the higher marginal costs are related to the increase in semi-fixed costs. The cost of intensive treatment is 3 to 5 times the cost of general ward treatment.
