Cortisol, thyroxine and sex hormones have been used in the replacement therapy for adenohypophysis for more than 40 years. However, the long-term prognosis remains unclear. The authors retrospectively studied 333 patients with partial or complete adenohypophyseal pituitary dysfunction. Between 1956 and 1987, 204 men (mean age 48.6 years) and 129 women (43.1 years) met partial or complete pituitary dysfunction. Of these, 223 were secondary to adenohypophyseal pituitary gland tumors, 57 were due to pituitary tumors and 53 were pituitary hypothyroidism with unknown causes. Hypothyroidism was diagnosed only on the basis of low serum PBI and low serum thyroxine until 1959. Serum testosterone has been measured since 1970; blood FSH and LH have been measured since 1975; serum and urine cortisol have been measured since 1969 and 1972 respectively. 53
