An evaluation in December 2003 of the Danish NationalAction Plan for the Aquatic Environment II showed thatnitrogen leaching from farmland had declined to almosthalf the amount of that in 1989.This can be ascribed tosuccessful implementation of several measures, the mostefficient of which were related to the use of fertilizers:lowered nitrogen standards for crops, increased nitrogenutilization in manure and catch crops.Although theobjectives of the plan were almost met and measure-ments have shown a similar, but not percentually as higha decrease in nitrogen concentrations in both inland andcoastal waters, the ecological impact in estuaries andcoastal areas is not yet satisfactorily significant.Asa consequence,a new National Action Plan for theAquatic Environment III,including both nitrogen andphosphorus reduction from farming, was agreed to inApril 2004.To ensure that good ecological status can beachieved in water bodies according to the requirementsof the European Union Water Framework Directive, thenational measures will be combined with additionalmeasures for individual river basins.
An evaluation in December 2003 of the Danish National Action Plan for the Aquatic Environment II showed that nitrogen leaching from farmland had declined to almost half the amount of that in 1989. This can be ascribed tosuccessful implementation of several measures, the mostefficient of which were related to the use of fertilizers: low nitrogen standards for crops, increased nitrogenutilization in manure and catch crops. Although theobjectives of the plan were almost met and measure-ments have shown similar to but not percentually as higha decrease in nitrogen concentrations in both inland andcoastal waters, the ecological impact in estuaries andcoastal areas is not yet satisfactorily significant.
