在1998年北京召开的潘天寿百年诞辰学术研讨会上,有人以“刘国松是制作方法的鼻祖”发难。面对突然袭击,刘国松慷慨陈词,坦然应战。言曰:“我着重的,是想由中国绘画的发展史里,看出它将来的可能走向,作为自己创造的动力。研究中国画家为何在元以前创造力有那么旺盛,又为什么明清两代就没有任何皴法和技巧的发明?我要找出那阻碍中国画继续发展的原因在哪里,以便唤醒我国美术界正视它的问题所在以及寻求解决之道。”
