Thimerosal is theoretically at risk of low neurodevelopmental toxicity to infants. The vaccine is known to prevent the morbidity and mortality of diseases as well as the risk of contaminated multi-dose vaccine bottles far outweighs any potential for thiomersal. However, under pressure from public opinion to oppose the use of various amalgam, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other agencies have started steps to reduce and eliminate thiomersal in vaccines. The current strategy will be revised in the next three years to reduce exposure to thimerosal. Three years later, the focus will be on new vaccination technologies, the replacement of preservatives and combination vaccines to further reduce and eventually eliminate thimerosal in vaccines
