林语堂喜欢演讲,可太多了也腻味。尤其是到台湾定居后,几乎每个星期都得例行公事讲上几次。国人演讲长得像王妈妈的裹脚布,客气寒暄话起承转合,林语堂苦不堪言。一次,轮到林语堂讲时已是中午过半,与会者饥肠辘辘,又不得不装出饶有兴致的样子。他上台后说:“绅士的演讲应该像女士的裙子,越短越迷人!”说完就结束了发言。还有一次,林语堂被邀出席一个宴会。吃完饭,主人说仰慕林语堂的大名,请他临时作个发言。拿人手软,吃人嘴短,林语堂再不情愿,饭已经吃了,闹僵了脸面上过不去。他叹了口气,深呼吸,挺起胸
