野生动物摄影是国际上公认的“最危险的行当”之一,曾经有一名外国摄影师对祁云说:“拍野生动物要吃苦、要冒险、还需要大量资金,你们中国根本拍不了野生动物的片子”。祁云不服,他义无反顾地选择了这个行当,成为中国第一个野生动物职业摄影师。辛勤耕耘近20年,祁云拍摄的《黑颈鹤》、《黑鹳》、《西藏野生动物》、《寻找野骆驼》等片在国内外重大比赛中获奖。1997年他荣获由中国环境新闻工作者协会和香港“地球之友协会”共同创立的首届“地球奖”。
