This article describes the state of the art of designing an advanced, modern L-band remote (200 nm) Air Traffic Watch Radar (ARSR) that provides the latest in-flight air traffic control. The new airway surveillance radar system is designed to improve the detection of targets to ensure a constant low false alarm rate output and to reduce system downtime, all of which are essential in the on-road automatic air traffic control system. The article discusses the main new technologies, such as: digital moving target display, dual beam antenna, digital CFAR receiver, RF sensitivity time control and distance azimuth gating design ideas and performance.
