Objective To compare the status quo of census register population and floating population in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, analyze the influencing factors and provide a scientific basis for targeted intervention. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 871 people in Guangzhou from March to June in 2009, of which 613 were registered in Guangzhou and 258 were floating population. Results The total social support scores of Guangzhou registered permanent residents and floating population were (60.11 ± 11.39) and (57.21 ± 13.33) points, respectively. All of them were in the intermediate support status. The scores of family support, friend support and other supports of the household population were (19.83 ± 4.35), (19.87 ± 4.16) and (19.42 ± 4.11) points higher than that of the floating population (19.73 ± 5.07), (18.79 ± 4.79) and (18.69 ± 4.83) respectively, with statistical significance ( t = 3.030,3.133,2.140, P <0.05). The mental health score of Guangzhou registered population was (15.93 ± 5.39) points, higher than that of the floating population (14.19 ± 4.81), the difference was statistically significant (t = 4.700, P <0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the type of household registration, self-rated physical health status and social support scores were the influencing factors of residents’ mental health status. Conclusions The physical health of the registered permanent residents and self-assessment in the field is poor, while the lower level of social support is associated with poor mental health.
