凤子生活在新旧交替的历史时期。他所生活的时代,亦是中西文化进入剧烈冲突的重要历史时期,西方各种文化、思想观念持续不断地输入,使中国传统文化面临解体,中国文化向近代化、现代化开始作出重大转化。在这一整体文化变动的格局中,吕凤子先生的绘画实践与绘画思想,既保留了传统文化的强大影响,又有外来文化冲击的痕迹。面对两股思潮的夹击,他经过艰难的选择,最终走出了一条以中国画为本位、融会西方学理为我所用的道路。在这一实践的过程中,他的运思方向有着极为鲜明的时代特色和个人特点,在近现代中国画发展史上有着重要的地位。重新反思吕
