概述了９０年代初我国由于大量进口锻压机械而给国内锻压机械行业造成的极大的困境，同时在出口方面也出现了一些新的机遇；介绍了近年国内锻压机械的发展情况并分析了其技术水平和性能特点；文中以较多的篇幅对国外９０年代以来锻压机械技术的发展总趋势和各类锻压机械结构性能的改进细节作了介绍和评价；最后还对我国锻压机械行业的今后发展提出了一些建议。
