Yu Le, executive director of Bertelsmann China headquarters, said the main reason for the closure of chain stores was the unsatisfactory financial position. Bertelsmann, the first foreign-funded enterprise to introduce the concept of a popular book club to China, has been operating in China for 13 years. This unexpected result has drawn everyone’s attention. The closure of the chain stores shows that the traditional domestic physical bookstores face the great challenge of subversive nature such as new media, new technology and new reading habits, and also have beaten the alarm of the domestic book industry.
