广州地理研究所在“文化大革命”期间遭到严重冲击,科研工作中断,科研设备荡然无存。1978年复所后,本所相继承担了地方和国家的多项研究任务,其中还有与联合国大学共同合作的科研项目。为了促进科研工作的发展,还积极采用新技术,加速实验室的建设。在短短三年来,已购置仪器设备745台(件),总值120万余元,建立了一个基本配套的中心实验室,一个气象观测站,一个制图车间,一个钻机班,以及一个正在加速建设的遥感研究室。中心实验室目前开展了利用C~(14)法测绝对年龄、化学分析、岩矿分析、微体孢粉分析和粒度分析等,为本所加速热带地理研究提供了可靠的科学依据。特别是C~(14)法测定年龄
