Thailand’s energy resources are not abundant. Oil is an important pillar of Thailand’s economy and the vast majority of its consumption depends on imports. As of early 1993, Thailand had a proven oil reserves of only 33 million t (2419 million barrels), in addition to natural gas reserves of 240 billion m 3. Last year, Thailand’s crude oil output increased by 13.3%, from 2.525 million tons in 1991 to 2.55 million tons (5.1 million barrels per day) while natural gas output reached 7.97 billion m3. Oil and gas are mainly produced near the Gulf of Thailand, accounting for about 33.8% of domestic demand. As Thailand’s hydrocarbon resources are dominated by gas, natural gas is Thailand’s most promising energy source.
