Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is an endogenous lipid molecule that has pleiotropic biological properties in addition to platelet activation. In recent years, PAF has been found to play an important role in male reproductive and sperm functions: it indirectly affects sperm function by increasing the concentration of intracellular Ca2 + via the inositol triphosphate diacylglycerol-mediated pathway on the cell-specific G protein receptor. Refined PAF concentration can reflect the sperm motility and fertilization potential, as a clinical assessment of male fertility index; exogenous PAF can increase sperm motility, acrosome reaction and artificial insemination pregnancy rate.
