On 23 February 2015, Fiji adopted the amendment to the Military Act, which completely abolished the death penalty. In this way it became the 103rd country in the world that explicitly abolished the death penalty. Then, in addition to the six countries that have abolished the death penalty in principle but are allowed to execute the death penalty under special circumstances (special periods including wartime) and 50 countries that legally maintain the death penalty but have not executed or suspended for at least 10 years At present, only 36 of the 195 independent countries in the United Nations membership still carry the death penalty, accounting for only 18% of the total. Fifty-two years have elapsed since Venezuela became the first country to abolish the death penalty, and tens of thousands of years have passed since the death penalty was passed.
