In recent years, much progress has been made in China on the relationship between grain yield of F_1 hybrid rices and some physiological characters. Experiments were conducted in our plant physiological lab during 1982-1991 to analyze the relationship of the grain yield of F_1 hybrid rice with the distribution and concentration of P and C using isotopes ~32p and ~14C. 1. Grain yield and the absorption of ~(32)p and ~(14)C It was shown that high grain yield (HGY) hybrid rices Shanyou 2, Shanyou 36, Shanyougui 33 and Weiyou 64 uptook more ~(32)p while low grain yield (LGY) hybrid Shanyou 177 absorbed less ~(32)p than their parents. Secondly, significant positive correlation between tiller number and ~(32)p concentration in tillers existed in several types of HGY F_1 hybrids including Xieyou 66 (Dwarf WA), Shanyou 66,Weiyou 66(WA), D-you 66(Dissi), Yuankyouzhi (BT) and Xiuyou 57 (japonica hybrid rice) whereas no sigmficant correlation was observed m LGY hybrid Shan-A / Lu36-1.
