China's Grand Periphery Strategy

If we wish to discuss China's Periphery Strategy we must first be clear the boundary of the surrounding areas.I would argue that China's understanding of its surrounding areas varies according to historical period.There is an ancient Chinese saying that says:"The imperial territory covers the whole world" which implies that at that time China thought of the whole world as its neighbor-a blind and commanding concept.Modem China,persecuted by the West,had no choice but to focus on rescuing and healing itself.At this time,the country had neither the time nor the ability to foster relations with its neighbors.After the founding of the People's Republic of China,the country was on the defensive when it came to relations with its neighbors,pursuing "leaning to one side" or rapprochement.It was in a state of crisis.Military presence was beefed up along its land borders and these areas were of great strategic significance.After Reform and Opening Up,China really began to observe the world,seeking ties with its neighbors which were of clear economic importance.Generally,China continued to put strategic resources into diplomatic efforts with countries with which it shares a land border.
